Modelling Narratives of Sufficient Mobility: A case study for Germany in 2040 (Arnz et al. 2021)

The mobility transition is deemed crucial for swiftly achieving our decarbonisation goals, but there is no common understanding. Many discussions unfold in urban areas and in the choice of new propulsion technologies. However, discussions about mobility behaviour in the most emission-intensive segment of passenger transport - medium and long distances - are comparatively rare. Here, sufficiency strategies, i.e. strategies to avoid unnecessary traffic and shift traffic to more environmentally friendly modes, are urgently needed. Under participation of experts, the research project "Modelling Narratives of Sufficient Mobility" develops drivers for the vision of a sufficiency-oriented passenger transport system. The focus lies on mobility behaviour between urban, suburban and rural areas in Germany, as this traffic is responsible for about two thirds of the energy demand and emissions. Subsequently, the research team generates narratives for sufficiency-led mobility and translates the developed drivers into parameters of a transport model which simulates the new transport system. The project aims at illustrating the impact of sufficiency strategies on the decarbonisation of passenger transport and thus provide a starting point for socio-political discussions and further research.

Abstract — The abstract summarises the need for modelling narratives of sufficient mobility and gives some background on the research field. Moreover, it describes the scientific methods under use and their interplay. The slideshow has been presented at the International Literary Modelling and Energy Transition Conference in Münster on Oct. 5th 2021 and supports the abstract visually.
